Detailed measurement and test protocols

Protolabs has introduced secondary services to meet on-demand manufacturing requirements better. Additional secondary services such as surface treatment and assembly will be added later this year.
Secondary services supplement standard process
As part of its standard process, Protolabs performs XYZ measurements at the beginning of the production run and during the final inspection. The additional measurement and testing services will complement the standard procedures to meet specific customer requirements. Processing time will depend on the process and factors such as part complexity and quantity.
"Our customers value our rapid manufacturing services for small batches and prototypes," says Stephen Dyson, Special Operations Manager at Protolabs. "However, they now want to take advantage of on-demand manufacturing for serial parts where the demands for sample, measurement and process documentation are higher.
Dyson continues: "The significant increase in demand from customers across all industries who want to take advantage of the speed and flexibility of on-demand manufacturing requires a simplification of the supply chain. With our secondary services, we reduce the number of process steps that customers have to deal with to save time and resources".
Many industries have specific processes and procedures for quality assurance, including Initial Sample Inspection (FAI), Initial Sample Inspection Reports (EMPB/ISIR) and Production Part Acceptance Procedures (PPAP). Some of them come from the aerospace industry, others from the automotive industry. Many industries have adapted these procedures because they provide the framework to create confidence in component suppliers and their production processes. The services also include the necessary test documentation.
