Quality assurance with computer tomography

Hamilton Medical AG manufactures ventilation solutions for seriously ill patients. Using computed tomography, the company has been able to analyse and optimise the welding geometries of its flow sensors, resulting in a significant reduction in production waste.

Hamilton Medical AG was founded in 1983 and develops intelligent ventilation solutions that make life easier for patients and caregivers in intensive care units. To make this vision a reality, the company relies heavily on CT technology. For example, Hamilton Medical was able to check the flow sensors of its ventilators with a target/actual comparison and optimise the welding geometries of the sensors. As a result, the company was able to reduce production waste and save costs in the long term.

The advantages of computer tomography

In principle, computer tomography (CT) can be used to digitise anything that can be infused by X-rays. Computer tomography is particularly suitable for complex geometries or those with accessibility problems. Even very filigree and soft components are very well suited, since no force is applied during the measurement. There is also no need to cut open a housing in order to record the inner contours conventionally - and thus no uncertainty that the components could be changed by such preparation.

The potential is far from exhausted

Despite all the advantages, there is still a lot of potential in almost all sectors. Manufacturers and suppliers, whether for the medical, automotive or plastics industry, can increase their efficiency and reduce costs, provided they know the possibilities of this technology better and know how to use them.

CT technology has become strongly established in Germany, partly due to the automotive industry, and is therefore being used more and more. In Switzerland, Lars Kahl, CEO of MessX AG, sees the potential by no means exhausted. "Especially in the area of additive manufacturing, which produces complex geometries and organic structures, the technology can still be used to an increasing extent," explains Kahl.

Possibilities of computer tomography in medical technology

Especially in medical technology, CT technology offers unique possibilities in quality assurance. Modern analysis devices for the treatment of diabetes as well as a wide variety of injectors for the correct application of the medication can be checked and digitalised by means of CT from the injection cannula to the housing. The individual parts are measured according to drawings and examined for distortion and internal defects in the material.

Stents for widening blood vessels and complex surgical instruments for use in minimally invasive procedures, which can perform complex tasks in the smallest of designs, also benefit from the digital data records of computer tomography.

Are you asking yourself what CT technology can do for your quality assurance?

Computed tomography is often not considered due to the prejudice that this measurement analysis is expensive and time-consuming. In principle, however, computed tomography can certainly keep up with alternative measurement methods in terms of price, so it is often interesting to buy this service. Let us show you what is possible with computer tomography. We offer test scans for this purpose, so that we can then look at the results together with you. In this way you can find out how CT technology can also significantly improve your quality assurance.
